In the years since 1915, 1638 R Street has provided beautiful residences and offices for several generations of Washingtonians. The front façade has been cleaned and restored to its original luster.  When new mortar had to be used, its color was carefully matched to the original. Its marble steps were painstakingly poulticed to reverse the effects of decades of use. Similarly, the hardwood floors were sanded, polished, and restored.  The original sinks were refinished and refurbished.  Many of the original light fixtures and mantles are still in the building, carefully restored to their 1915 appearance.  Where new fixtures were added, they were tastefully chosen to complement the originals.   Even the molding has been restored to its original condition and appearance.
